as a former border station in the roman empire, royal residence of the savoy dynasty, first capital of the kingdom of the unified italy, most important economic power of italy and venue of the olympic wintergames in 2006 the city of turin tries now to repeat the enormous expansion effords of the past.

the transition of the mono-industrial, fordistic city into a "telematic city as a future digital information and kommunication space" (rolf kreibich, 1996) has consistently been persued.the urban transformation project "metamorphosi" of 2009 continues the far- reaching urban changes of the "spina centrale". so the municipality of turin follows it`s own longstanding tradition of strategic urban development and therefore maintains a special position in italy today.

even in cultural terms the tremendous energy of the urban development has been able to create exactly defined profiles. with the futurism as a movement of the italian avantgarde in the beginning 20. century and the arte povera as a artistic post-war movement of the sixties two significant artistic directions were able to emerge in italy, each of them adopting a clear position towards the effects of industrialisation. the impact of arts in turin at that time is as clearly articulated as the other impacts of the industrialisation on the urban development in economic and social terms.

this dualism, as well percievable during other periods of urban transformation in turin, keeps on shaping the identity and the luminosity of the city.

"we will sing of the multi-colored and polyphonic surf of revolutions in modern capitals: the nocturnal vibration of the arsenals and the workshops beneath their violent electric moons: the gluttonous railway stations devouring smoking serpents; factories suspended from the clouds by the thread of their smoke...it is in Italy that we are issuing this manifesto of ruinous and incendiary violence, by which we today are founding Futurism."

filippo tommaso marinetti, manifesto of the futurism, 1909

"what is happening? banality is entering the arena of art. the insignificant is coming into being or, rather, it is beginning to impose itself. physical presence and behavior have themselves become art... we are living in a period of deculturation. iconographic conventions are collapsing, symbolic and conventional languages crumbling...therefore: impossible to believe in the message of images, in the communication of new informations of explanation and explication, in structures, which impose regularities, behaviours or a syntax, structures which bow before moralistic and industrial ideologies. changing cities

urban transformations and urban identity
